This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as designers or design paraprofessionals who support professional engineers within the civil construction domain. This course prepares students to perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and apply significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment/roles/techniques for themselves and others.

Students will develop site specific work designs to ensure the implementation of the client’s site requirements. They demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills. Course structure includes broad competency areas such as CAD/AUTOCAD operations, engineering drawings, engineering calculations and mathematics, and designs for civil structures.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to develop high-level skills and knowledge in managing civil construction design projects using CAD/AUTOCAD.

They will also develop knowledge and skills in applying civil construction design principles in urban and rural structures.

Graduates will.

  • Demonstrate the self-directed development and achievement of broad and/ or highly specialized areas of civil construction planning and design.
  • Develop practical and technical skills to work with civil engineers on the design and construction of infrastructure projects
  • Create pathway opportunities for further qualifications and learning

Students will have the opportunity to use and learn computer-aided design (CAD) drawing software and equipment as part of this course. Students will also visit civil construction projects and sites as part of excursion plans and learn from industry experts (guest speakers) in application of design skills in real-word projects.
