Unique Student Identifier (USI) Application

Unique Student Identifier (USI) Application: A Complete Guide

A USI or Unique Student Identifier is your individual education number for life. A USI creates an online record of all your nationally recognized training from Australian educational institutions.

You must always obtain your USI as soon as possible to ensure you receive your statement of attainment, qualification, or awards.

If you are a student in university, TAFE or studying with a registered training organization, you must have a USI. In fact, a USI will facilitate your learning journey in obtaining a qualification or statement of attainment. A USI is also required for Commonwealth financial assistance (like HECS-HELP). A USI is also required of international students studying in Australia with an Australian education or training provider. In fact, from January 1, 2023, all higher education students, including international students studying in Australia, will need a USI to graduate and get their degree or VET transcript.

You can obtain a USI by accessing the Student Portal from the USI website. Once on the Student Portal, you have the option of using Digital Identity to create your USI.

Once you obtain your USI, it can be accessed online from your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

You may already have a USI if you have completed any type of vocational education and training (VET) since 2015.

The Student Portal on the USI website has a section for recovering forgotten USI.
There are 4 ways to recover your USI:
Through your email address,
Using your Mobile number,
Providing your personal information and check questions
Providing your personal information along with  ID document.
For any issue, you can contact the USI team between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. (AEST), Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays).

After successfully creating a USI, a copy is forwarded to you for your personal records. To share your USI with educational or training providers, you can print a copy and forward it or send an email of your USI verification details from the USI Student Portal.

You can also nominate another person to apply for a USI on your behalf. This is done through a Third-Party Authorisation (TPA).

Third Party Authorization (TPA) is the process where the USI account holder can nominate another person or organization to be their representative and perform tasks such as making enquiries on the USI account, updating the USI account, and even getting a copy of the VET transcript, on the USI account holder’s behalf.
